Madame Sourdough is an outstanding bakery. The breads and pastries look amazing, and they taste amazing, everything is fresh, full of flavour, and made with real care. No matter what you get, you can’t go wrong. Highly recommend.

My previous workplace was close to South Melbourne Market, and I’ve been enjoying the almond croissant from that famous French bakery there ever since they opened. I used to think they made the best almond croissant in Melbourne (though to be honest, their quality isn’t quite the same these days—but still hard to beat). That is, until I tried the almond croissant from Madam Sourdough. The slow oven heat gently brings out the almond aroma, and the almond topping stays beautifully attached to the pastry as you eat—no flaking off. The filling is rich with real almond, not overly sweet almond paste or sugary jam. It takes skill and patience to bake almonds just right—not burnt, but perfectly cooked—and you can taste the difference. Their seedy sourdough loaf is another standout. Packed with large, whole seeds and high-quality ingredients, you can tell both money and heart went into it. Yes, it comes with a price tag, but it’s absolutely worth every cent.

Delicious sourdough breads & pastries, so far the best we have found in Melbourne. We tried a selection of pastries and bread - so far the almond croissant is a standout! The spelt tin loaf made for a mean toasted Reuben sandwich too. Nothing like the sense of anticipation - queuing on the footpath to be served individually 😁 (also great marketing for passers by). Returning soon.

Madam Sourdough is our favourite Sunday morning treat. The staff are very friendly and the pastries are always delicious it’s so hard to choose! The almond croissant is definitely the winner, may seem a bit pricey but we often share one because it is so filling. They have also supported our local primary school’s fundraising which is much appreciated and so generous.

A hidden gem, the croissants and sourdough products at Madame Sourdough are amongst the best in Victoria. The quality is better than many of the known bakeries in the hip, inner city suburbs of Melbourne and the prices are very reasonable. The hardest decision will be choosing what to buy! We grab a loaf, croissants and try something new each time. Worth the drive.
