Beautiful place with awesome food, coffee and tea beautifully presented.
The scones were excellent as were the sweets plate and the savoury plate.
Overall the feel of the place is really nice with a bit of old world charm with the fine bone china and high tea setting.
The only things that would have made it better are just the service levels. Not the fault of the team but it felt like they were run off their feet for a place that wasn’t full.
Food was a fair wait and the coffees came out 15 mins after the food which felt odd. We were delivered pies and sausage rolls with no tomato sauce and that just would have been an easy one. We then had to ask for it and then ask again as the person we asked forgot.
Love the concept it’s just when you present like this then getting service that was a bit sharper would have fit with the overall experience.
The team were polite and smiling.

I was a bit adamant to go here for Mother’s Day high tea because of the bad reviews (eg. bad/ slow service). But I went anyway and I’m glad I did! I couldn’t compare to how it was before as I had only been there once, but I assume management did listen to the feedback and found ways to improve their service.
It was just a bit slow at the start when they were looking for people’s tables. But after that, each section of the tea house had designated staff who were very attentive to every customer’s needs. There was just this one staff who wasn’t sure if they were allowed to give more scones; I had to insist that it was unlimited supply and she had to double check it. I never saw her again after that. And we did have more scones after.
Comparatively, I think their high tea is reasonably priced. It’s not extravagant, but it has elegance and charm. The desserts and jam weren’t too sweet. The scones were great of course, and the savoury ones were tasty. Overall, my 10 year old daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our high tea experience with them.

I absolutely love Mary eats cake. They have the most fluffiest and tastiest scones l have ever eaten. I first went there for a baby shower and loved it so much that l looked for any excuse to go back. So I took my mum there for a high tea one weekend and she raved about the scones and how she can never bake scones that fluffy and tasty. I can't wait to come back and next time bring more members of my family. The loose leaf teas are also delicious and l couldn't wait to purchase some to take home. I will definitely be a return customer.

We had the most wonderful experience at Mary Eats Cake in Montrose for my mother's 90th birthday High Tea on the 27th April 2025
From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt warm, charming, and beautifully welcoming. The décor is whimsical yet elegant, perfect for a special afternoon tea.
The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive without being intrusive, and they made sure every detail was perfect. The high tea itself was absolutely delicious — the scones were freshly baked and buttery, the sandwiches and savory bites were full of flavor, and the desserts were pure heaven.
Mary Eats Cake is the perfect spot for a catch-up with friends, a special celebration, or just treating yourself to something beautiful. I can’t wait to visit again!

The scones are perfect, same with the coffees. I was a bit confused with the kids ‘2 small pies and tomato sauce’ because I thought they were beef but it had chicken in them. It was completely my fault for not clarifying with the staff if it was beef or chicken. Other than that the service was 10/10, it’s really relaxing. Definitely coming back
