Usually frequent Suzuran in Camberwell (their sister stores I believe). Quality of sushi is equally outstanding here. Sure prices aren’t cheap, but worth it and the best quality takeaway sushi you can find I reckon. Generous fish slices on the nigiri, rice is perfectly seasoned and not hardened despite me making a pick-up order for 5:50pm (10 mins before they close). Very well stocked grocers too.

Had high hopes given reviews. We love sushi and hoped to be regulars. However, our order came out very disappointing. E.g. the sushi roll that should have had prawn in it, had barely a thread of it. In the photos, you will have to play Where's Waldo to spot the prawn in each piece. Instead the roll was stuffed full of filler vegetables and sweetened egg. Extra terrible tasting as most of the veg even seemed to be marinated in something sweet. Pretty terrible with each bite.

Lovely Japanese shop with Japanese groceries, plates and freshly made sushi. We tried the classic nigiri, the rice was delicious and the sashimi was awesome!

Love this place so much! The sushi always hits the spot and tastes so fresh and clean. I always get the large mix nigiri platter between me and my husband 🍣

If you’re looking for a solid sushi takeaway spot in Melbourne, Hinoki Japanese Pantry in Fitzroy is worth checking out—especially for sushi platters. Not going to lie, when I first opened the box, I wasn’t super impressed with the presentation. It looked a bit more casual than I expected, but by the end of the meal, I honestly wouldn’t change a thing. What really stood out was the quality of the fish—super fresh, and they’re generous with it. They give you more protein than rice, which is the opposite of what a lot of places do. You’re not dealing with huge rice balls and tiny slivers of fish here, which actually makes it a better deal than it first seems (despite the higher price tag). The chirashi bowl was a standout—it’s a great way to try a variety of fish, with nice additions like scallops. If you’re into exploring different textures and flavours, definitely give that one a go. The California and nori maki rolls were decent too—not mind-blowing, but solid. Overall, yeah, it’s on the expensive side, but for Melbourne, I’d say the quality makes it worth it.
