Soi 38: The Underground Boat Noodle Obsession in a Melbourne Carpark

38 Royal Ln, Melbourne VIC 3000

The best bowl of noodles in Melbourne is hidden in a carpark. That's not a joke — that's the address.

The Location

Soi 38 occupies a corner of the carpark on Royal Lane, just off Bourke Street in the CBD. There's no flashy signage, no elegant entrance. You follow the smell of pork stock and chilli oil down a ramp and find one of the most authentic Thai street food experiences the city offers.

The setting is deliberate. Soi 38 is a direct reference to the street food stalls of Bangkok's Sukhumvit Soi 38 — a legendary night market that closed in 2016. The Melbourne incarnation keeps the spirit alive.

The Boat Noodles

The signature dish is the boat noodle — small bowls of rich, dark pork or beef broth, rice noodles, pork blood (optional), crispy pork crackling, and fresh herbs. In Thailand, you'd eat four or five bowls. The same logic applies here.

Order multiple. The bowls are small and the broth is deeply flavoured — a slow-cooked reduction that takes most of the day to build.

The pad see ew and pad kee mao are equally good. The green papaya salad has the right amount of heat.

The Experience

Soi 38 is loud, casual, and unpretentious. Plastic stools, communal tables, paper menus. The service is fast and the turnover is quick — don't come expecting a long, leisurely sit.

Come hungry. Order more than you think you need. Leave very satisfied.

Hours: Mon–Fri 11am–3pm, 5pm–9pm | Sat 11am–9pm Walk-ins only

The carpark location is part of what makes Soi 38 special. If you haven't been, fix that.
