I think Sana Coffee is one of my favourite spots for brunch in Melbourne and definitely worth the long drive. I love the variety of dishes on offer, it’s a well thought out Japanese inspired menu and I want to try all their dishes. Their viral udon carbonara was soo creamy and flavourful- totally deserves the hype. I thought the tuna poke Benedict with tuna, yuzu guacamole, ramen egg, smoked miso hollandaise on a potato loaf was such a smart mix of ingredients and such a special Asian fusion twist from your standard eggs benedict. Everything was so tasty and there wasn’t a single dish we didn’t enjoy. The matcha was absolutely terrific and a stand out not only in terms of quality but also combining it with banana milk and earl grey was so good. It has your standard items but also so many items that have that wow factor. It’s definitely a cafe worth visiting. We tried the- ▪️Nori Tacos $25 — Tempura Nori Shell, Salmon Sashimi, Pickled & Fried Shallots, Chilli Mayo, Guacamole and Fish Caviar ▪️Udon Carbonara $27 — Creamy Cheese and Salted Butter Udon, Charred Bacon Steak, Smoked Dashi, Soft Egg, Black Pepper ▪️Tuna Poke Benedict $29 — Tuna Poke, Yuzu Guacamole, Ramen Egg, Salmon Roe, Pickled Shallot, Smoked Miso Hollandaise, Potato Loaf ▪️Chirashi bowl $30 — Flavoured Rice, Salmon, Shitake, Tuna, Cucumber, Avocado Purée, Edamame, Pickled Shallot, Sesame, Kosho Mayo, Salmon Caviar and Nori ▫️Iced Matcha with earl grey $10 ▫️Iced banana milk matcha $9 ▫️Iced Hojicha with earl grey $10

Was really looking forward to checking out the cafe after seeing videos on Instagram! It is a walk-in only basis and gets busy on the weekends. We waited about 30 minutes for a table and were advised of a 60 minute seating time which we were more than ok with. We were greeted with a warm welcome however the table service was really lacking for the premium cost of the food. Maybe it was because it was busy or a new staff member, but there was a lack of familiarity with the menu which is fairly small. Additionally, nobody checks in to see how the food is. Our food was dropped off and no cutlery/napkin to eat with, we had to wave down another waitress as we could not get the attention of the one who served us initially - this was disappointing. The matcha was hand whisked and delicious. Tuna Poke Benedict lacked flavour - would be nice to have salt & pepper on the tables. Chicken karaage and chicken katsu Sando 10/10 and very filling. Overall, there is room for improvement. We would love to return to try different options on the menu.

Had the hojicha latte, Okonomiyaki w karrage chicken and Chirashi bowl. Okonomiyaki Was nice but very thin and didn’t taste authentic Japanese Okonomiyaki. Chirashi Bowl had raw tuna and salmon pieces - great presentation, nice flavours - a hint of spice in it. Hojicha latte was nice but lacked the strong Hojicja flavour.

Impressive little spot. Udon carbonara was a real winner - true to its roots with an egg and cheese-forward coating for the springy udon and an umami-packed, slightly sweet bacon which was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Good restraint on the seasoning of the udon as the bacon is quite salty, so it was balanced really well. Nitpicky comment: udon could be firmer. Firecracker salmon bowl also had a very good balance of flavours - loads of umami from the salmon, furikake and perfectly cooked soy marinated eggs, with a nice sweet and sour crunch from the pickled cucumber and carrots. Cook on the salmon was great - soft and pink on the inside. Only negative thing to say is that the salmon skin, while seasoned well (think there was cumin?), wasn’t either crispy or soft, it was a weird in-between where it was chewy and tough. Otherwise a perfect dish. Good vibes, comfortable seating, music wasn’t too loud. Edit: Tried their zaru soba set. Overall flavours were good but the soba had no spring / bounce to it at all. Very soft especially considering it’s served as cold soba which typically has a nice bite to it.
