Loved this place! Was excited to see all the art exhibition and displays. A lot to look around and see. It was a big 3 story building but everything seemed compact and easy to discover as you walk around. Parking was good it has underground parking which is paid parking but gives you direct access to the gallery.

The National Gallery of Victoria is an absolute must-visit in Melbourne. The collection is impressive — from classic European works to bold contemporary pieces and fascinating design exhibitions. The building itself is stunning, especially the water wall at the entrance and the soaring Great Hall ceiling of stained glass.
What I really enjoyed was the mix of permanent and rotating exhibitions, which means there’s always something new to discover. The layout is well thought-out and easy to navigate, and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Even the gift shop is worth a look, offering quality art prints and creative souvenirs.
Whether you’re an art enthusiast or just looking for a calm, inspiring experience in the city, NGV has something for everyone — and the fact that general admission is free makes it even better. I’d highly recommend setting aside a few hours to explore it properly.

I remember going here when I was a kid and loved it. I went recently with my kids to enjoy the train ride in and experience some culture and gorgeous works of art. My kids loved every moment. Most of the gallery is free but exhibitions are ticketed, which is ok because you can purchase tickets there as well as online. My kids learned about artists and truly appreciated their creativity. We will be going again.

As a visitor, I felt genuinely captivated by the Asian artworks at the National Gallery of Victoria. The vivid colors, spiritual depth, and refined craftsmanship in pieces such as the thangka, the Japanese screen, and the Chinese ceramic figures created a sense of quiet awe. Each object carried its own history, yet together they formed a tapestry of cultural memory. Still, I found myself wishing the museum would explore Asian heritage with greater depth. A dedicated exhibition—similar to the Terracotta Warriors show currently presented at the Western Australian Museum—would offer richer context and allow these masterpieces to speak more.

The NGV is definitely a must-visit when you’re in Melbourne. The variety of art on display is incredible — from classic works to contemporary installations, Indigenous pieces, and international exhibitions. Every room offers something unique, and you can easily spend hours exploring without getting bored.
What I loved most was how thoughtfully everything was curated. The exhibitions had a clear flow, the descriptions were informative, and the overall vibe was calm and inspiring. The gallery space itself is also stunning — spacious, clean, and easy to access by public transport.
That said, it can get very crowded during major exhibitions. Some parts felt rushed or hard to fully enjoy because of the number of people. Also, the layout can be a bit confusing at times, especially when transitioning between different sections or locations. A few visitors seemed frustrated by early room closures or long queues for ticketed exhibits.
Still, the positives definitely outweigh the negatives. NGV offers a rich cultural experience and is a gem for both locals and tourists. Just try to visit on a weekday or earlier in the day to avoid the peak rush!
